Fundraising for Perrin Ryan Delorey Memorial Tributes

Dear Westport Little League Community,

We are approaching the one year anniversary of the tragic passing of Perrin Ryan Delorey, a terrific, kind and inquisitive boy in Greens Farms Elementary School and enthusiastic Westport Little League Baseball player. As part of our commitment to the Westport community, we announced last year that Westport Little League would honor his memory in ways that not only capture Perrin's spirit, but also highlight what made him so special, which we are beginning to roll out with the support of, and close coordination with, his family. As described below, we need your support to launch these efforts.

We are introducing an inaugural sportsmanship award in his memory. Perrin worked hard to be a better player and teammate, and always supported his teammates and treated opponents, coaches and umpires with the utmost respect. He was extremely coachable, a coveted draft pick for his dedication, positive outlook and team-first attitude. He exhibited the hallmarks of sportsmanship—he helped lift other players' spirits when they needed it and could always be heard cheering on his teammates.  He made other players around him better and helped make them want to play baseball even more. His enthusiasm for baseball was palpable and contagious.

This special award will be given at the end of the regular season to recognize one player in each of A, AA, AAA and Majors who best exemplifies these attributes on the field and in the dugout. For example, it is intended to acknowledge the player who picks up a teammate after a strikeout or an error; takes a knee when an opposing player is injured; is most willing to play various positions to accommodate others; is first to line up to shake hands after the game; discourages and eschews trash talking; most respects coaches and umpires, etc.

Each of the four winners will receive a trophy designed to replicate the game ball that was given to him by the coaches of the AA Cubs on May 5, 2018 for his performance that day (see third attachment to this email), which Perrin was humbled and overjoyed to receive. I have attached two photos of the trophy, including one held by a future hand model.

A teak bench with a commemorative plaque featuring a quotation from Perrin will be placed on Kowalsky Field where he played his final game and where the memorial event in his honor was held. We also plan to purchase and plant a tree in Perrin's honor along Kowalsky Field.

We have designed a banner retiring Perrin's Number 5 on the AA Cubs for all future Westport Little League seasons that will hang on the outfield fence at Kowalsky in perpetuity.

Back by popular demand, we plan to make available more of the "PRD5" commemorative bracelets that we designed last year and are exploring commemorative patches for uniforms.

We are excited to honor Perrin via these and other tributes that will be introduced over the course of this season and seasons to come. These tributes will be self-funded with the support of the baseball community. We need your support to fund these activities.

A GoFundMe page has been launched to raise money for these and other memorial efforts and activities under discussion with the Delorey family. We hope that the fundraising via the GoFundMe page will enable us to award the inaugural Perrin Ryan Delorey Sportsmanship honor and other projects for years to come to keep his memory alive.
